Crayon Stains on Carpet: Tips from a Professional Green Cleaning Company

Got a young artist in the family who sometimes gets a little out of hand? Here’s how to remove crayon stains from carpet—the green cleaning way!

1. Scrape with a dull knife or blot with a white paper towel to remove as much of the crayon as possible.
2. Apply isopropyl alcohol to a cotton ball, white paper towel or a clean white cloth. If the stain has penetrated deeply into the pile, blot until it has disappeared, or no more color is being transferred to the cloth. Be careful not to let the alcohol penetrate into the carpet backing because this can cause damage. If the stain is only on the surface, rub in one direction at a time. Don’t rub in a circular motion to remove stains, as this can destroy the texture. As soon as the stain has vanished, stop. If it hasn’t, continue to the next step.
3. Apply Crystal Spotter – a green cleaning product – directly to the stain. Work it into the affected area using a blotting motion. If the stain is still not disappearing, apply some more Crystal Spotter and blot with a white paper towel until it does.
4. If there’s still stain on the carpet, you can moisten the tufts of the affected area with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. Allow it to stand for an hour. Blot and repeat until the stain disappears. No rinsing is necessary because light causes peroxide to convert back to water. Apply a pad of paper towels and use a brick or other heavy object to weigh them down.
5. To clean the area, use the Carpet Roamer Spotting Tool and Crystal Spotter.
